This motel is completely deserted, the name First / Last Motel in Texas is no longer entirely on the advertising sign. As early as 1903 the city was founded Glenrio, across the city runs the border of Texas / New Mexico.

Tucumcari – Blue Swallow Motel
Since 1993, the small motel exists in the center of the town. The neon sign is known far beyond the place out, and certainly the most photographed in Tucumcari. In 1998 the Motel was purchased and prepared of Hilda and Dale Bakke . Today the guest are provided with warm hospitality by the new owners Nancy and Kevin, they will always be welcomed you like family. Until today you can get a room in the motel, if you have pre-booked.

Tucumcari, NM - Palomino Motel

Tucumcari – Palomino Motel
The motel i in Tucumcari located on the main street, the neon sign is hard to miss. Whether the motel has a route-66-story, or I could not figure it out. The owner wants to sell the place.

Tucumcari – Safari Motel
The Motel Safari opened in 1959, designed and built by Chester Dohrer, an independent motel developer. The hotel has a lot of retro design elements. By 1962, the Safari Motel was a Best Western Motel, then the BW sign was removed and added the famous camel. The beautiful neon sign is lit at night.

Tucumcari – Historic Route 66 Motel
The hotel was built in the International Style in the 1950s, the hotel had its heyday. However, it is still open and offers various rooms.

Tucumcari – Buckaroo Motel
Since 1952 there is this motel in Tucumcari. Buckaroo means, in the american language Cowboy, so this was also the symbol on the neon sign board in front of the hotel.

Tucumcari – Paradise Motel
The hotel was opened in the 1950s and had since, like many other hotels in Tucumcari, much operation. The neon sign was restored in 2003.

Tucumcari – Roadrunner Lodge
The Roadrunner Lodge was originally two different properties, La Plaza Court built in the late 30s or early 40s and the Leatherwood Manor on the east side bulit in 1964. David and Amanda acquired the property in April 2014 after it had been closed for a little over 4 ½ years. They are still renovatin and decorating the place, so today travvelers can enjoy the glory of the old days in this motel.

Tucumcari – Lasso Motel
The motel is gone now and this sign is all that’s left as a reminder of the past. One of many Motels in Tucumcari so as this were victims of the interstate an the chains motel.

Tucumcari – Apache Motel
The Apache Motel opened in 1964. In 2006 it was renovated by the new owners of the motel. They restored the sign and painted it white. The motel but was again closed and is in Tucumcari one of the many abandoned hotels. (picture is coming soon)

Tucumcari – Vorenburg Hotel
This historic hotel dating back to 1907 was in the middle of Tucumcari until the 1970s. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire, only the walls remained standing.

The hotel is totally run down and abandoned. It is diagonally across from the La Loma Motel.

Moriarty – Lonhorn Ranch Motel
The old motel is located right at Longhron Ranch Truck Stop. It is still in operation. But probably mainly booked from truckers. You will find the motel at exit 203 off Interstate on the right coming from east.

Moriarty – Sunset Motel
The motel was built in five stages from 1954 to 1969. The young couple, Bill and Elaine Pogue had planned to conduct their business along the busy Route 66 for many years. The hotel is now still on Route 66 and is still family-owned, it is well maintained and gradually renovated without losing the charm of the 1950s. A room costs $66.

Moriarty – Lariat Motel
The hotel is located in middle of the town, there are weekly rates for long-term customers. I would not recommend a tourist to saty there.

Albuquerque – Tewa Lodge
1946 opened the Tewa Motor Lodge in Albuquerque on Central Avenue, Route 66. The Tewa Motor Lodge has been listed in 1998 in the National Register of Historic Places.

Albuquerque – Aztec Motel
Built in 1933, the Aztec Auto Court in Albuquerque was the first motel on East Central Avenue when it became the historic Route 66. Today it is the oldest motel in Albuquerque making it one of the most important Route 66 icons. It was renovated in 2011, but the old neonsign still stands.

The Sands Motel is located right on Route 66 and is AAA aproved. So probably a good accommodation for Route 66 travelers.

Gallup - El Rancho Motel

Gallup – El Rancho Motel
The hotel in Gallup is famous. At the opening in 1937 were many Hollywood stars present. In the following years, the hotel was the main point of contact for John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, Humphrey Bogart, Katharine Hepburn or Doris Day, when they were traveling.

Las Vegas – Historic Plaza Hotel
Back in the 1800’s the Plaza Hotel became the center of commerce in th New Mexico. The hotel provided elegant lodging for mostly prominent travelers arriving by train. A million-dollar renovation in 1982 returned the century-old hotel to its former glory as the “Belle of the Southwest”. The Plaza Hotel today is a verey unique and very nice place today on one of the old section of Route 66.

Las Vegas – Castaneda Hotel
The Hotel Castaneda is an historic Harvey Hotel. It is located in Las Vegas, New Mexico, along Amtrak’s line. The hotel first opened in 1898, closed in 1949.
Recently it was purchased by the owners of La Posada Hotel in Winslow, Arizona. They are currently in the design process and hope to begin rehabilitation work in 2015.
