Chicago – Route-66-Beginn-Sign
The Route 66 Begin-Sign is in Chicago on Adams Street, across from the Art Institute. Of course that is not the original beginning of the road, as the route was built in 66. Quite often the sign was moved to another location, but today (2013) it is there, in front of Panda Express.

Joliet – Prison (Correctional Center)
The prison was in operation from 1858 to 2002. The Joliet Prison was built with the help of prisoners, the building cost $ 75,000. The prison is famous for being the site of several movies and series such as “The Blues Brothers” and the U.S. series “Prison Break”.

Wilmington- Gemini Giant
The Gemini Giant is one of the famous Muffler Men, which were used as advertising figures for Muffler Shops on the side of Route 66. This one sports a rocket instead of an exhaust and also wearsa helmet and advertises the Launching Pad Drive-In. The Gemini Giant stands directly at the entrance of Wilmington, IL.

Gardner – Route 66
Gardner is a small town in the Midwest, about 97 km southwest of Chicago. Gardner has about 1450 residents. Route 66 runs right through the town.
In Gardner two Route 66 signs are painted on the road in the Division Street at the railroad crossing.

Odell – St. Paul’s Catholic Church
A tunnel was dug in Odell to allow worshippers unharmed access to church despite of the heavy traffic on Route 66.

Chenoa – Downtown
No Route 66 attraction in the traditional sense, but the downtown Chenoa has a few old buildings that are worth seeing. For example, the old wall advertisements for the “Selz Royal Blue Shoes Company” on one of the old building. The company was once owned by a German immigrant, Rolf Selz.

Towanda/Lexington – Historic Route 66
Between Towanda and Lexington, the roadie finds a very long piece of Historic Route 66, this is a designated walkway for pedestrians and cyclists. Information boards on the history of Route 66 are posted along the road.

Funks Grove – Shirley Station
The depot is located opposite the general store of Shirley. (The Funks Grove Depot is now within the maple syrup grounds.)

Shirley – Funks Grove – Maple Sirup Farm
The German immigrant Isaac Funk and his family have produced maple syrup on this family farm for several generations. If you want to purchase some please schedule an appointment.

Atlanta – Bunyon Giant/Tall Paul Muffler Man
The Atlanta Muffler Man was originally intended for the Paul Bunyan Café on Route 66 in Flagstaff, AZ, then he stood in front of the Berwyn Bunyan Hot Dog Café, finally he had to move to Atlanta, IL. He is one of the Route 66 attractions there.

Springfield – State Capitol of Illinois
The Capitol is the seat of government of Illinois and was built during the years 1868-1888. It is, like most State Capitols of the United States, a domed structure. The construction costs in 1868 amounted to 4,500,000 U.S. dollars. It can be visited Monday to Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm CST and Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm CST. The Capitol is located directly off Route 66 in Springfield, IL.

Litchfield – Route 66 Museum & Welcome Center
Opening times are: Tuesday to Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sunday 1pm- 4pm CST. It is situated on the Old Route 66 across from the Ariston Café.

Staunton – Henry’s Rabbit Ranch
Linda and Rich Henry opened it as a tribute to the Jack Rabbit Trading Post in Arizona her Rabbit Ranch. (Hare it is.). In addition to the souvenir shop, there are many WV Rabbits to see and lots of real rabbits, too. It is a must see on Route 66 in Illinois.

Staunton – Country Classic Cars
This Route 66 attraction is a must-see for anyone interested in cars. Classics of all makes and model years can be found here. In addition to sales you can visit the exhibits and the lot for $ 1 admission.

St. Paul Lutheran Church / Church of the Neon-Cross
This church has become famous because of the blue neo cross you can see for many miles in the dark. It is located on Old Route 66 near Hamel, IL.

Livingston – Pink Elephant Antique Mall
This Antique Mall is housed in an old school building. Announced by a Beach Guy, who is not a Muffler Man. But The Muffler Man (Harley Davidson) stands on the lawn in front the mall. Also to be found on the lawn in front of the mall the Pink Elephant, a UFO and an ice cream stand in shaped like an ice cream cone. A wealth of photo opportunities for Route 66 travelers.
